Rwanda Secondary Education Reform

πŸ“š Rwanda Introduces New Learning Pathways in Secondary Education Reform

Rwanda’s Ministry of Education has announced a major transformation in the secondary school curriculum aimed at restructuring how students are grouped academically. The reform eliminates the traditional 11 subject combinations in favor of three focused academic tracks: Mathematics & Science, Arts & Humanities, and Languages.

This strategic shift was unveiled during the second day of the National Education Conference on June 20, 2025, and is part of broader efforts to align the education sector with Rwanda’s Vision 2050 goals. According to Minister of Education Joseph Nsengimana, these new pathways are intended to equip learners with practical skills and the flexibility to pursue higher education or join the labor force.

The Ministry assured that all schools will be supported during the transition, with readiness assessments scheduled during the summer. Core subjects such as Mathematics, English, ICT, and Entrepreneurship will remain mandatory for all students, regardless of their chosen stream, ensuring a strong foundational skill set across the board.

The updated system also aims to address labor market needs and global standards, creating a more adaptable and competitive workforce. Extensive consultations with over 5,500 individuals β€” including students, educators, and community leaders β€” played a crucial role in shaping the new structure.

Students currently enrolled under the old curriculum will not be affected by the changes, and their qualifications will continue to be recognized. The reform is expected to roll out gradually, minimizing disruption and enhancing the overall quality of education in Rwanda.
